Welcome from the President

Welcome to The Adhesion Society website. If you have an interest in adhesion there will be something within these pages to stimulate your interest whether an old hand or a newcomer to the business.

As the new guy on the block it seems appropriate to mention a little of my background. I have concentrated on the application of surface analysis methods of XPS and ToF-SIMS to adhesion phenomena going back some three decades at  the University of Surrey in England.   As someone who has been attending Adhesion Society Meetings for more than twenty years it is still with some trepidation that I approach the role of President, having seen over the last two years as Vice-President the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind  the scenes to make the Society what it is today. But, the Society, above all else, reflects the skills, expertise and interests of the global membership. If you are a member you will be familiar with the conviviality of the Annual Meeting which provides a backdrop to scientific discussion. If you are not a member then please do take the plunge and attend the 32nd Annual Meeting in Savannah, Georgia, in February 2009.

So do please peruse the pages of this website and consider active involvement in the Adhesion Society; attend the Annual Meeting, present a paper, make a nomination for one of the awards, or join the team responsible for the many facets of Adhesion Society activity. Please do feel free to contact me with any suggestions that you might have regarding the Society.

I look forward to seeing you in Savannah next February!

With best wishes

John F Watts

ASC sponsors two new awards:  I am delighted to report to you that, through the generous support of the Adhesive and Sealant Council, the Adhesion Society is pleased to announce two new awards targeted for young scientists and engineers working in adhesion science and technology.  The Outstanding Young Adhesion Scientist Award recognizes a young scientist or engineer for conducting outstanding and fundamental research in adhesion science.  The Outstanding Young Adhesion Technologist Award recognizes a young engineer or designer for conducting outstanding work in the innovative application and/or use of an adhesive or sealant.  Both of these annual awards carry a plaque and a check for $1000.  One of the primary missions of the Adhesion Society is to provide recognition of accomplishments in the international adhesion science and technology community.  Young members are the future of our Society, and we express our sincere appreciation to Lawrence D. Sloan, President of the ASC, as well as their Board members and corporate members for initiating and supporting these new awards.  Please consider nominating a young scientist, engineer, or designers for these awards following the attached guidelines.  In order to implement this program in its first year, the deadline for nominations has been extended to 30 June.

Winner of 2008 Award for Excellence: I am very pleased to announce that John Watts of the University of Surrey has been chosen to receive the 2008 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science sponsored by 3M.  His citation will read “For the innovative application of surface analysis methods to study the interfacial chemistry of adhesion”.  You will find additional details on this in the attached Newsletter, which also contains highlights of the recent meeting, award winners for the 2007 meeting, and updates from the divisions.

Other Related Meetings:  The Call for Papers for Adhesion '08/Euradh 2008 produced an encouraging number of submissions: about 110 in total.

The Scientific Committee has now produced what it hopes will be an exciting program over the three days of September 3-5, 2008, in St. Catherine's College, Oxford, UK.  The full program and registration instructions are now downloadable from the "Events" page on the SAA Website:
www.UKSAA.org

All SAA Members wishing to register, but who are not members of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, should enter "SAA Member" in the space reserved for Membership Number and this will enable them to take advantage of the reduced Members' rate.

WASHINGTON - NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate has released its "Research Opportunities in Aeronautics 2008" announcement. The initial version of this announcement solicits research in support of the Supersonics Project.

NASA anticipates that educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and industry engaged in fundamental research will be the primary award recipients for this announcement.
